In March 1845, Merritt Scoggin died due to gunshot wounds inflicted at his home. William Jackson was acquitted for the shooting, and fled immediately after acquittal. Merritt’s death date is unknown at this time, but the community published a reward for capturing William in a newspaper dated July 12, 1845.
